Empowering a New Beginning with the Bluegrass Council of the Blind

At 70 years old, a former medical professional faced an unexpected challenge: vision loss. This individual, determined to re-enter the workforce, found themselves struggling to navigate the world of technology, an essential skill for modern employment. Recognizing the need for support, the Office for Vocational Rehabilitation referred him to the Bluegrass Council of the Blind (BCB), an organization dedicated to assisting individuals with vision impairments in achieving greater independence.

Upon his arrival at BCB, a comprehensive skills assessment was conducted by the staff. This assessment, a blend of observation and a verbal or written questionnaire, aimed to identify the client’s current abilities and the level of assistance required to regain his confidence and skills in using a computer. Such assessments are tailored to each individual, recognizing that some clients may need help with basic tasks like keyboard orientation, while others might be familiar with the basics but require more specialized training.

For this client, the focus was on mastering the use of a screen reader and Dragon Naturally Speaking, a dictation program. However, the journey was not without its obstacles. His equipment was old and outdated, and his computer lacked internet connectivity, adding layers of complexity to the training process. Undeterred, BCB’s team adapted by researching older versions of the software and providing detailed, easy-to-follow instructions tailored to the technology available to him.

Understanding that note-taking was another area of difficulty, BCB recommended a digital voice recorder for recording training sessions. Additionally, they supplied an audio version of the software manual, ensuring that he had accessible resources to reinforce his learning.

As training progressed, a remarkable transformation occurred. Initially, the client expressed doubts about his ability to learn the new skills. But as he engaged more deeply with the training, his confidence grew. In the most recent session, he shifted from uncertainty to excitement, eager to continue his learning journey.

This ongoing story is a testament to the dedication of the Bluegrass Council of the Blind and the resilience of those they serve. By providing tailored support and innovative solutions, BCB empowers individuals to overcome challenges and embrace new opportunities, regardless of age or circumstance.
