Education

Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. It’s essential to getting and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits. And it’s fundamental to a community’s economic prosperity: a well-educated workforce attracts world-class jobs.

United Ways is leading the effort to increase school readiness, improve literacy and keep teens in school. Join us! You can advance the common good – 1 student or 1 school at a time.

Income

The community and family issues that stem from the economic and financial pressures facing individuals and their families are growing increasingly complex and more difficult to address. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education in many areas, and skill levels have not stayed in alignment with changing industry needs.

The United Way Financial Stability Partnership was created to strengthen communities by identifying and tacking the underlying causes of the financial hardship facing today’s families. United Way bring together cross-sector partners to help lower-income individuals and families achieve financial independence by empowering them with the tools and skills necessary to maximize their income, build savings and gain assets.

Health

Health is such a basic need, it impacts every aspect of a person’s daily life. A child with a toothache is unable to concentrate in school and succeed. A family without health insurance is often overwhelmed to the point of bankruptcy by the financial burdens of an illness. Seniors without prescription assistance have to make frightening decisions on which medicine they can afford and which ones they will go without.

Whether it is a neighbor without health insurance, a victim of abuse, or someone struggling with mental illness or an addiction, United Way works to ensure everyone has access to affordable and quality care so they can lead safe, healthy, and rewarding lives. United Way supports local health and human service programs as well as partners with local advocates, faith leaders, healthcare professionals, the business community, and policy makers to create sustainable answers to the current healthcare crisis.

Success By 6

United Way is committed to supporting learning and development and a sense of belonging for children and youth so that they become responsible and contributing adults. We want to ensure children have positive developmental opportunities so that they can start school ready to succeed. We want to grow success in learning and in life.

Because of this, we have developed a website which will provide you with the tools necessary to grow with your child. We have also detailed why early education is so critically important to our community, and our future. Click here to visit the Success By 6 website.

Business & Education Network (BEN)

Business owners realize the value of a versatile and skilled workforce. Finding that workforce can be a real challenge. The Business and Education Network (BEN) has been formed by Commerce Lexington, Leadership Lexington, United Way and Fayette County Public Schools to encourage employer involvement in a variety of educational related activities that promote workforce readiness and career awareness. BEN is the result of the belief that businesses must become much more involved in the education and training of future workers. BEN will serve as the network between businesses and all existing educational partners – striving not to re-create existing services and programs, but rather to encourage and strengthen both communication and opportunities. Through BEN you’ll have access to potential entry-level workers learning valuable workplace skills – while improving the region’s workforce. Volunteer now!

United Way 2-1-1

Every day, parents, counselors and family resource specialists search for help for those in need. They look for services such as food, shelter, medical care, substance abuse treatment, protection from domestic violence or disaster relief – the list is endless. While nonprofit and government services are ready to help, the large number of providers – with more than 500 different telephone numbers – makes it hard to find the right place quickly. The result is often repeated calls and frustration. But, not anymore. 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember phone number that connects people with the help they need. It's accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in a multitude of languages. Just give it a try – pick up your phone and dial 2-1-1. Click here for more about 2-1-1.
