Thirty-one members of United Way’s spring 2010 Get On Board class graduated on Thursday night, June 17, at a special recognition ceremony held in Lexington. The spring 2009 graduating class includes Tamara Allen, Cody Alton, Paige Bensing, Claudette Collins, Nick Covault, Danita Coulter, Tim Davis, Nathan Dickerson, Angela Evans, Tanya Ferguson, Edward Fields, William Henderson III, Jacqueline Hollowell, Carmen Mason, Ximena McCollum, Townsend Miller, Marnie Mountjoy, LaJoyce Mullins-Williams, Damien O’Brien, Chante Perryman, Jason Pryor, Kathryn Rasnick, Kate Sanford, Julie Stanifer, Frances Stokes, Christian Torp, Kelvin Towns, Sherry Watson, Antoinette Watts, Jordan Wilson and Kyle Wilson. The goal of Get On Board is to recruit, train, place and retain a diverse group of volunteers on nonprofit boards in Central Kentucky. The initiative was created to strengthen the community through the gathering of widely diverse candidates who can serve on nonprofit governing boards in order to improve their effectiveness.
Candidates with strong leadership qualities are chosen through a volunteer-led selection process. These candidates are required to go through 10-week training course before they can begin their nonprofit board service. The program also works to place and retain these graduates on community nonprofit board of directors following graduation.
The spring 2010 class completed training which included legal and ethical issues, cultural competency, fundraising, parliamentary procedure and discussions about roles and responsibilities of board members. This class brings the total to 292 Get On Board graduates who are serving on Central Kentucky nonprofit boards and commissions.
